Safeway Receipts Collection September 12-October 6, 2008

Musician Enrichment Foundation needs your help! Please turn in one Safeway receipt dated September 12th - October 6, 2008 to MEF. It needs to be received no later than October 11th. You can put them in the tuition box or drop them through the mail slot at the PLACe Music Academy, 3101 W. Peoria Ave., Suite 101, Phoenix, AZ 85029, or mail them to Musician Enrichment Foundation PO Box 38118, Phoenix, AZ 85069. MEF will earn 10% on "Back to School" items you purchased from August 6-September 9. These purchases will show up at the bottom of all your Safeway receipts dated September 12th - October 6th.

I know it sounds a bit confusing, but all we are asking you to do is turn in one Safeway receipt dated September 12 - October 6th. MEF will benefit from your purchases and you will help MEF in our mission of providing musical opportunities in the community. If your family is registered in the escrip program through a school or community organization, MEF will not benefit from your purchases. If you are not sure if you are registered, or know that you aren’t, then please turn in your receipts to Carol Mellis. We will take the time to sort them out and turn in the valid receipts. You do not need to register for escrip for this once a year promotion, just give us one Safeway receipt dated September 12 - October 6th. Thank you! Your help is much appreciated!

Solo Competition

The MEF Annual Solo Competition will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Orangewood Presbyterian Church. The Senior Division First Place Award Winner will receive $400, and Second Place Award Winner will receive $100. Cash awards will be given to the First and Second Place winners in the Junior Division and Elementary Division. The competition is open to woodwind, brass, orchestral strings and piano students. First Place Winners in each Division will be featured soloists at the MEF Spring concert on May 9, 2008. Entrance fee is $20.00.

Our special musical guest Zack Hexum lives in Los Angeles and is a composer, guitarist, singer and saxophonist. His recordings can be heard on his website zackhexum.com.
We are excited to include his talents in this year's concert.

Chamber Ensembles Forming

Spring is a great time for MEF chamber ensembles. Below is a list of the ensembles presently rehearsing and a list of the ensembles that are now forming. Ensembles rehearse at the PLACe Music Academy, 3101 W. Peoria Ave., Suite 101, Phoenix, 85029. All ensembles will perform in the MEF Annual Concert on Friday, May 9, 2008 at Saint Mary's High School Auditorium (3rd St. and McDowell, Phoenix)

String Ensemble Level 1, instructor Connie Jahrmarkt: Every Monday from 6:15 pm-7:00pm.
String Ensemble Level 2, instructor Connie Jahrmarkt: Every Monday from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm.

Junior Flute Ensemble, instructor Jeanie Pierce: Every other Monday from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm.
Adult/Teen Flute Ensemble, instructor Jeanie Pierce: Every other Monday from 5:00 pm- 6:00 pm

The following ensembles will begin rehearsing in February or March, 2008. They are open to advanced high school/college musicians. Rehearsals will be scheduled according to the ensemble members availibility.

Fund raiser lunch a great success!

The Outback Steakhouse fund raiser lunch was a great success! A good time was had by all and MEF raised enough funds to run the programs for Spring 08. Special thanks to Outback Steakhouse (5605 W. Bell) cooks, servers and proprietor Marci Gackle for their unbelieveable generousity. Also, thanks to the MEF Flute Ensemble (Jeanie Pierce, director) and the Carol Mellis/John Calvert Duo who provided wonderful music for the lunch.
We hope to make this an annual event and look forward to seeing you again next time!

Junior Flute Ensemble's first rehearsal is on Monday, September 17th at 5:00 pm at the PLACe.

We have an exciting event planned for Sunday, January 27, 2008. It is a lunch/concert at the Outback Steakhouse Restaurant at 57th Ave and Bell Rd. More details to follow. Tickets are $20 for adults and $8.00 for kids 12 and under. ALL the money from the ticket sales goes directly to MEF!! Tickets can be purchased at the PLACe Music Academy or call 602-301-3641.
